Bandsaw Blades
As with all the tools you may own there are procedures that if followed correctly will extend the life of both your band saw and Bandsaw Blades. Ideal tension, feed pressure, regular cleaning, and plenty of lubrication are all required for you to get the most from the bandsaw. There are precautions to be taken in order to protect Bandsaw Blades from wearing out. For example, when the blades are new, they are often too sharp, and any rigorous action on it will cause damage. In order to avoid premature wear, the makers of them often suggest a break-in action for new Bandsaw Blades. This can be done by reducing the speed of sawing in the initial period used, often to half of the normal speed. Reducing the feed quantity in the beginning, say for the first 50 square inches of the material, will also help to wear off the sharpness you do not need on the blade and will make it much more durable. Even if you don`t know what the normal feed pressure for the material should be so that it is safe, start with a light feed, and slowly increase the feed pressure until proper curly chips (in metal) or chip sizes (for wood) are fully formed.
